Africa

Project Summary

Humanitarian Action for Africa is fostering sustainable livelihoods for youth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo through vocational training, entrepreneurship support, job placements, psychosocial support and mentorship.

Humanitarian Action for Africa (HAA) is a national humanitarian and development organization based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo working alongside communities affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, climate shocks, and social exclusion. Through locally led and inclusive approaches, HAA supports vulnerable populations particularly women, children, displaced people, and underserved youth across areas including economic inclusion, health, food security, peacebuilding, climate resilience, and community recovery. At the heart of its work is the belief that investing in young people is essential to building long-term stability, social cohesion, and sustainable peace in fragile and conflict-affected regions.

With support from the Citi Foundation, HAA is implementing a youth employability and economic inclusion initiative for vulnerable young people in eastern DRC, particularly in Mwenga (South Kivu) and Salamabila (Maniema). The project provides vocational training in fields such as mechanics, tailoring, carpentry, ICT, agro-business, and entrepreneurship, while also strengthening financial literacy, business management, and employability skills. Beyond technical training, the initiative supports youth-led businesses through mentoring, startup grants, professional placements, and reintegration kits with tools and materials. Recognizing the complex realities many participants face, the program also integrates psychosocial support, counseling, and community reintegration activities helping young people build sustainable livelihoods while contributing to greater resilience, social cohesion, and peace within their communities.
